OPERATION NIGHT WK
What is Operation NightHawk?
The Concept
Venturer teams of 4–7 members navigate through a challenging bushland course at night using only maps, compasses, and their wits. Along the way, they visit a range of activity bases where they complete tasks that may include:
-
First aid simulations
-
Problem-solving challenges
-
Pioneering or knots
-
Communication skills
-
Emergency response drills
-
Team coordination exercises
Each base awards points based on performance, cooperation, leadership, and problem-solving.
Why It's Valuable
Night Hawk is not just a competition — it's a chance for Venturers to develop real-world skills in:
-
Navigation and bushcraft
-
Communication and leadership
-
Risk management and safety
-
Working effectively as a team
-
Building resilience under pressure
It also fosters camaraderie, confidence, and a strong sense of achievement
Supervision and Safety
While the event is run at night, it is carefully managed with qualified leaders, support crews, and first aid personnel stationed throughout the course. There are strict safety protocols, check-in points, and regular supervision. Leaders ensure all youth are well-prepared and supported before, during, and after the event.
When and Where
Night Hawk typically takes place in Term 3 and is hosted in a bushland location in the Darling Downs Region — ideal for both navigation and outdoor activity. Venturer patrols camp for the weekend, with one night dedicated to the main course event and daytime for social interactions getting to know Venturers from other groups.
In Summary
Night Hawk is a signature scouting experience — one that challenges Venturers, builds lifelong skills, and encourages growth through adventure. It’s a safe, fun, and inspiring event that’s highly regarded by youth and leaders alike.
If your Venturer enjoys challenges, teamwork, and outdoor adventure, Night Hawk is an event they’ll remember for years to come!
